Amy Temple Cottages

Information & criteria for becomming a resident

The cottages are intended to provide good quality, affordable accommodation for older single ladies of limited means, from the village of St Margaret’s. The  terms of the Charitable Trust  require that;

The Almspeople shall be unmarried or widowed ladies of limited means, not less than 60 years of age, of good character who, except in special cases, have resided in the Parish of St. Margaret’s for a period of not less than 10 years preceding the time of appointment.

In practice we will look very broadly at each application and in particular, give consideration to individual “need”, under which heading we would also include considerations such as health, isolation and loneliness.

The Clerk of the Trustees keeps a list of ladies who have expressed an interest in the properties and will contact them when a cottage becomes available. Each applicant will then be required to fill in an application form and will be interviewed in order to assess both that they meet the conditions of  eligibility and that the accommodation is suitable for their needs.

Residents are required to pay a maintenance contribution each month, which covers the day-to-day running costs of the cottages including insurance, maintenance, repair  and garden upkeep as well as preserving and protecting the Charity for the future. Maintenance contributions will always be kept below the then current amount which Dover District Council sets for Housing Benefit on one bedroom properties. We are able to do this because all administration, supervision and even some minor repairs are carried out by our unpaid Trustees.
